Thirty-two teams from six continents will compete next month in soccer's FIFA World Cup, the world's most popular tournament, which kicks off June 11 in South Africa.
In New York, it's easy to catch the fever. Nearly every nation can claim a few bars or restaurants, and the monthlong tournament is an excuse for bar owners to fly national flags and brag about the size of their ... flat screens.
Thousands of Big Apple barkeeps are calculating time zones (South Africa is six hours ahead), renting TV projectors and planning breakfast menus. It's good business: The tournament can bring a huge revenue boost for establishments able to tap into the frenzy.
